Working Holiday Visa

The working holiday visa is the most popular visa available to young Commonwealth citizens who wish to travel and work in the United Kingdom for a temporary period.

How do I qualify for this visa?

  • You are between the ages of 17 and 31, inclusive.

  • You are a Commonwealth citizen, except for Lesotho, or a British Overseas Citizen; a British Overseas Territories Citizen; or a British National (Overseas).

  • You want to come to the UK for an extended holiday, with the intention of taking paid work incidental to your holiday.

  • You are able to support and accommodate yourself without recourse to public funds.

  • If you are married, you should both qualify under the age criteria and be travelling together.

  • You must not have dependent children over five or who will attain the age of five during the working holiday.

  • You are able to pay for your return ticket to your home country.

  • You intend to leave the UK at the end of your holiday.

How do I apply and do I need entry clearance?

You need to apply for a working holiday visa at the British High Commission in your home country. You will need to provide documentations to prove that you fulfil the above-mentioned criteria. Breytenbachs will be able to assist you in this regard. You will need entry clearance before travelling to the UK as a working holidaymaker.

Some Rules and Restrictions on Holder of a UK Working Holiday Visa:

  • The visa is granted for a maximum period of two years. You can apply for an extension on the visa if the extension of your stay would not take your stay beyond two years from the date you were first granted entry clearance. You will also be able to apply for a six month visitor stay at the end of your working holiday visa, during this six months you will not be able to work.

  • Any period spent outside the UK during your two year visa will be counted as part of the two years and therefore lost.

  • You are only allowed to take up paid work incidental to your holiday and may not engage in business or provide services as a professional sportsperson.

  • You are only allowed to work for 12 months of the 24 months for which the visa is granted.

  • You have no recourse to public funds.

Does this visa lead to indefinite leave to remain?

No, a working holiday visa does not lead to indefinite leave to remain.
